Kavion EverettKavion Everett, a Heartland Workforce Solutions/DESI WIOA Youth Participant, has always enjoyed writing. Whether it’s creative writing, or an essay on historical events, it has long been a passion of his. On Friday, March 6th, Kavion got a glimpse of what it takes to turn his passion into a Career.

Through the WIOA Youth program, Kavion was able to job shadow Creighton Men’s Basketball reporter Jonathan Nyatawa. The two first spent time touring the Omaha World Herald Offices and meeting with other reporters to learn about the day to day functions of a journalist.

After leaving the office, Kavion joined Jon to watch the 7th ranked Creighton Bluejays basketball practice before their final game of the regular season. Kavion says the experience only reaffirmed his
interest in becoming a Journalist.

“I thought of it as a great experience. It [Journalism] really interests me a lot. I got to meet a lot of different people and see them work well together.”

Kavion is working with Sr. Career Specialist, Heather Petersen, and the Business Services Representative, Shane Donovan. Kavion plans to hold off going to school a bit longer. He is hoping to gain a new Work Experience Opportunity through HWS Youth Program that will allow him to utilize his writing skills. The HWS/DESI Business Services Representative is working with area newspaper and media outlets to try and create this opportunity for Kavion.
